Physics I - Honors Course Information
Text: Physics: Principles and Problems
- The textbook is an excellent resource, especially for those who have been absent. The text includes worked-out problems, typical of the material covered in class. Students are expected to read each chapter.
Test Days: Tuesday and Friday
Required Material for Course:
- Calculator - one that performs trigonometric functions. A graphing calculator is preferred.
- Protractor
- Notebook
- Graph paper
Make-up Policy:
I will write your name on the board under the name of the assignment.
- If you need a makeup, the word "makeup" is written next to your name. You will be given "double" the number of days that you missed to make up an assignment. For example, if you miss one day, you will have two days (excluding the day of your return) in which to make up your work. After that time, you cannot make up the assignment.
- Once your assignment is made up, I will write the due date next to your name.
- If your work is late, I usually will write "1 day late" or "2 days late" next to your name.
- When your name is erased, you can no longer turn it in for a grade.
- Late major work will be accepted for three days. There is a ten point penalty per day.
- Late daily work will be accepted for one day at a 25 point deduction, two days late for a 50 point deduction, and will not be accepted after two days.
- Late work will not be accepted after the work is returned to the other students.
- Make-up tests typically consist of four (4 pt) short answer questions and six (14 pt) problems. The short answers questions cover concepts listed on the review sheet.
- Work can be made up any morning. Any afternoon makeup must be scheduled.
Grades: 60 % major and 40 % daily
- There are typically 2 to 3 major test grades during the six weeks grading period. Tests usually have the same format - ten multiple choice questions valued at 2 points each, and 6-7 problems whose point values vary (for a total of 80 pts). You must memorize formulas and constants for your tests.
- There is one major lab each six weeks grading period. I call these a "Practicum." You will be given a "problem" which you must propose a solution to with either your lab group or the entire class. As a group, you must decide what data must be taken and how it will be analyzed. At the end of the Practicum period, data will be collected which you will use for your Laboratory Report. If your solution is correct to the Practicum question, you (class &/or lab group) will be awarded a five point bonus on the next test. Major labs will be written according to information posted on the Internet (Practicum Information). The major lab counts as one test grade. Your write-up must be the work of the individual student.
Klein Oak High School Honesty Code: On all major laboratory reports and practicums, you will be required to include this statement (with your signature) at the top of your assignment: There will automatically be a five point deduction if this statement and/or your signature is not included.
I affirm that I have neither given nor received unauthorized assistance on this assignment.
Student signature: _______________________________________________________
- Daily work consists of daily lab grades and worksheets.
- A worksheet is given with each unit.
- Your homework is due on the day of the worksheet. This is the final day that it is accepted! Your homework can be turned in any time before the worksheet. The day it is accepted is with the worksheet. Since it is part of the worksheet grade, it cannot be turned in after this time.
- Your homework is worth 20 pts of your worksheet grade. I will mark and usually correct your homework. It will be returned attached to the worksheet.
- You will only be allowed to work with your lab group on the worksheet.
- Pertinent formulas and constants will be written on the board on the worksheet day. You do not have to have them memorized.
- Daily labs will be either in the form of handouts. Each question typically counts ten points.
Conference Period: 7th
