Peggy E. Schweiger graduated from Temple High School in Temple, Texas, in 1967, where she was named a National Merit Finalist. She was awarded a Merit Scholarship from The University of Texas at Austin from which she graduated in 1971 with a BS in Chemistry. She attended Sam Houston State University, where she was named Outstanding Secondary Education Student. She received a ME in Counseling from Prairie View A&M University in 1993.
Mrs. Schweiger has taught at Klein Oak High School in the Klein Independent School District, Spring, Texas, for twenty years. Her current teaching assignment is Physics I - Honors and AP Physics B. She is also the Physics SL and HL instructor for the International Baccalaureate program at Klein Oak High School. Mrs. Schweiger is the recipient of many teaching honors. In 2001, she was selected as one of three state finalists for the 2001 Presidential Award for Excellence in Math and Science Teaching. In March 2002, Mrs. Schweiger was recognized by President George W. Bush as the 2001 Presidential Award for Excellence in Math and Science Teaching recipient for Texas. She was selected as 2003 recipient of the Outstanding Physics Teaching Award, presented by the Texas Section of the American Association of Physics Teachers. In 1996, she was nationally recognized as a GTE GIFT Fellow. She was named Teacher of the Year for Klein Independent School District in 1997. In 1999, she was nationally recognized as an Honorable Mention Teacher in the Radio Shack/Tandy Scholars program. She was named as Outstanding Teacher for the national Radio Shack National Teacher Awards program in 2000. She received Honorable Mention in USA TODAY'S All-USA Teacher Team Program in 1999. In 2001, she was one of sixteen teachers in the nation named to the USA TODAY All-American Teaching Team.She was named the first place high school winner of the 2000-2001 HSSC/TASCD Instructional Excellence Grant. Mrs. Schweiger is a PTRA, a Physics Teaching Resource Agent, a national program promoting physics education sponsored by AAPT, the American Association of Physics Teachers, and NSF, the National Science Foundation. She serves as the PTRA Regional Coordinator for HAPT (Houston Area Physics Teachers) as well as the Rural Coordinator for Texas A&M University Rural Center. She also served as the TSAAPT (Texas Section American Association of Physics Teachers) high school representative to the STAT (Science Teachers Association of Texas) Board. Mrs. Schweiger is a technology workshop consultant for Rice University. In 1999, Mrs. Schweiger was selected to attend a two-week workshop sponsored by NASA and NSTA, the National Science Teachers Association , held at the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, AL. She also was named a state winner in the Compaq's Teaching with Computer Technology Grant Program in 1999. Mrs. Schweiger was selected to participate in the Fulbright Memorial Fund Teacher Program. As a Fulbright Memorial Fellow, she was the guest of the government of Japan for three weeks in June of 2000. Mrs. Schweiger's Physics I-Honors and Physics AP classes at Klein Oak High School had the opportunity during the 1999-2000 school year to be involved in space station development. KOHS was one of twenty-five schools across the country selected by NASA as a beta test site in 1999-2000 for the TReK platform providing telemetry support via the Internet for International Space Station remote operations. Mrs. Schweiger also served on the Advisory Committee for Phase II of the Toys in Space program, in conjunction with The Houston Museum of Natural Science. |
